At the age of 15, he began his vocal training with a neighbor named Rajaram. After that, he dedicated eight years to learning how to play the flute under the guidance of Bholanath Prasanna. In 1957, he joined All Indian Radio in Cuttack, Odisha where he worked as both a composer and performer.
